We have now each had a chance to see The Last Jedi twice and we are continuing our discussion of the film. This time we are digging deeper into the themes of the film which include: ascension and facing the future, coming to terms with failure and finding your place in the world.

This film has been a hot subject of debate in the fan community and even on our podcast we find ourselves having differing opinions on The Last Jedi. One thing we both agree on is that this is one of the most thematically dense Star Wars films with dialogue that reveals so much about the characters that it takes multiple viewings to unpack it all. Even as we post this episode we are planning another discussion of the film.

We hope you enjoy the second review podcast of Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi is just a few days away and we are ready for it. After 2 years of anticipation, all of our favorites are back(minus Han). We wanted to do a podcast that will serve as a preview episode, almost a pre-game show for The Last Jedi.

We wanted to use this podcast to talk about our expectations of the film, which are unusually higher than normal, and why they are so. This episode does not delve too deeply in speculation, and there are no spoilers outside of what appears in the trailers.

So, if you are waiting in line, in your car on the way to the theater or just looking to kill sometime until The Last Jedi hits theaters, then please enjoy our Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi preview.

Pixar's latest film, Coco has arrived in theaters and it is time for our podcast review of the film. There was a time when it seems as though every Pixar film was a monster hit, and a treasure of modern storytelling. The studio was unstoppable. Recently however, they have been in a bit of a slump. Inside out earned rave reviews and was an outstanding film, but The Good Dinosaur and Cars 3 fell well short of expectations both critically and financially.

But now Coco is here...and it is fantastic. It's dazzling visuals, enchanting music and heartfelt story make it one of Pixar's finest films. It is a love letter to Mexican culture, showing respect and reverence while still having some fun with tradition without mocking it.

This film is everything we love about going to the movies. A rich environment with character we connect with and a story that with great aspiration.

Please enjoy our podcast review of Coco.

It's time for our review of Justice League. It's been a rocky road for the DC Comics Cinematic Universe. After fairly decent start with Man of Steel, they stumbled badly with Batman v Superman and things got even worse with Suicide Squad. Wonder Woman however, turned out to be a great success and rekindled some hope that these amazing characters could be brought together for an awesome film.

Unfortunately, many of the problems that existed in Batman v Superman still exist in Justice League. The story is choppy, the script is below average, the villain is underdeveloped and the moments that should feel epic and awesome just simply fall flat. There are some positives in the film. Wonder Woman is a joy to watch and The Flash essentially steals the movie. There is an excellent scene at the Superman statue and the soundtrack also has some fun throwbacks to previous DC films. But in the end, its just a big CGI laden mess.

Perhaps most frustrating is that this is a film that had a decent outline. The elements of a potentially good film all exist, but nothing really comes together. The story begins by establishing a world hopeless without Superman, a plot point restated several times through the film, but that hopelessness is never resolved on screen. We don't see how they world is affected by these heroes coming forward.

In this podcast we give our full review of Justice League.

The final installment of our Star Wars Revisited series is here as we discuss Episode VII: The Force Awakens. This series has given us the opportunity to re-watch the saga and comment on it with fresh eyes. In this podcast we discuss a film that we both believe to be one of the best in the saga. This is the installment before we head into The Last Jedi next month.

However, before we get to The Force Awakens we have some other great items for you.

First we have the major announcement from Lucasfilm regarding Rian Johnson currently developing a brand new Star Wars trilogy as well as information on a new live-action Star Wars television series that will be part of Disney's upcoming streaming service. The announcement of the Rian Johnson trilogy seems to indicate a high level of confidence in The Last Jedi. It seems unlikely that they would give Johnson so much creative freedom if they were no quite happy with the work he did on Episode VIII.

Second, we have our first guest interview in the brief history of Nerd Flix & Chill. Jack Geckler, who worked on digital animation for The Force Awakens joins us to discuss his experience working on the film. Jack provides a lot of great insight about all the work involved in creating a film like TFA.

Thor: Ragnarok is a change of pace for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Director Taika Waititi went in much different direction than the previous Thor films, opting to make a film that is a comedic buddy romp, rather than a mythological clash of gods and monsters. Waititi’s choices serve the film well as Ragnarok is fresh, funny and a lighthearted spectacle that will much needed as we head toward a darker time with the Marvel films to come.

The strength of the film lies in the chemistry of it’s cast members. Everyone is having fun on the set and it is evident in the finished film. Chris Hemsworth shows off his underused comedic timing and the script allows for a lot of improvisation that really helps the film maintain it’s energy. Cate Blanchett chews up the scenery as the sadistic and sexy Goddess of Death, Hela.

Thor: Ragnarok is not a film that delves deep into story…it’s more spectacle than substance but there is enough of a heart to the movie that it doesn’t feel cheap or forgettable. This is a film that relies on humor and spectacle and succeeds in being exactly what it set out to be. In this podcast we give our full review of the highly enjoyable, Thor: Ragnarok.

The first season of Stranger Things was an absolute phenomenon that took the world by storm. Now, 15 months later we return to Hawkins for Stranger Things 2.

The Duffer Brothers have brought back all of their key players, but they have made the bold choice to take the story in new directions and not simply duplicate the success of the first season.

What the Duffers have done with Stranger Things 2 is incredible. This show succeeds not because of its nostalgia, rather the incredible execution of the dramatic moments.

In this podcast we discuss our thoughts on Stranger Things 2 including all of the different references we spotted to other films. We also put the "derivative" criticism to bed once and for all.

The next stop in our Star Wars Revisited series is the final film of the original trilogy, Return of the Jedi. While many in the fandom regard this as the weakest of the original films, we found that there are a lot of high points. This is particularly true of the opening act on Tattooine and the unrestrained creativity of the creatures.

This is a film with some ups and downs, and some cringe worthy additions that have been made over the years. In this podcast we discuss our thoughts on Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi after viewing with fresh eyes. Spoiler alert...we still have no idea what Luke's plan was to free Han.

It’s very easy to be cynical about all of the sequels remakes and reboots that of been flooding cinemas over the past several years. However with Blade Runner 2049 there is nothing to be cynical about.

This sequel to the Ridley Scott sci-fi neo-noir classic is an excellent film. Blade Runner 2049 is directed by Denis Villenueve who recently brought us Arrival and Sicario. It’s a film that explores themes of authenticity and our desire to live lives of significance and rise above the mundane. It’s story is moving and it’s aesthetic is astounding.

Here is our podcast review of Blade Runner 2049. Please let us know your thoughts on Facebook and Twitter @nerdflixchill

Marvel has had a lot of success in it's Netflix series. Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage turned out to be very strong. However, Iron Fist was a major setback that has left some apprehension over The Defenders.

The Defenders brings together all four heroes from the Marvel Netflix series to save New York from The Hand. There are some very strong moments in The Defenders and some that are not so strong.

We had mixed thoughts on this series, and in this podcast we discuss what worked well, and what didn't.

Game of Thrones Season 7 is now complete...and the wait for season 8 has begun. Season 7 is one of the more divisive season of Game of Thrones, however we both loved it.

This season primarily dealt with themes related to the younger generation stepping out of the shadow of the previous generation. Additionally, closure from past traumatic events was a common theme throughout this season. We also had significant meetings and character moments along the way.

We have been doing episode recaps throughout the season, but the season 7 wrap up gives us a chance to give our overall thoughts on the season, as well as make some predictions for the 8th and finale season.

Please enjoy our season 7 wrap up and season 8 prediction.
