Annihilation is the latest film from Alex Garland, whose debut film Ex Machina, was a critically acclaimed work of sci-fi filmmaking. Garland sticks with that genre with his adaptation of the Jeff VanderMeer's book Annihilation. The adaptation is loose as Garland, after reading the book, wrote the screenplay based on his memory of the book, never referring back to it so that he could retain the "dream-like" quality of the story.

Annihilation follows the story of a biologist who enters into a natural phenomena called "The Shimmer," that seems to be having an impact on the environment around it. Within the deeper story we find evident themes of self-destruction, refraction, creation and metastasization. These themes are well explored as a work of science-fiction, but a film in this genre would not be complete without stunning visuals and world-building which this film does so well. It also includes a creature so unsettling that the mere realization that it exists on film will make you recoil while also grinning with delight.

In this podcast we give our full review of Annihilation while also discussing the film's many themes. It is a thoughtful work of science-fiction cinema that deserves to be seen in theaters.

Pixar's latest film, Coco has arrived in theaters and it is time for our podcast review of the film. There was a time when it seems as though every Pixar film was a monster hit, and a treasure of modern storytelling. The studio was unstoppable. Recently however, they have been in a bit of a slump. Inside out earned rave reviews and was an outstanding film, but The Good Dinosaur and Cars 3 fell well short of expectations both critically and financially.

But now Coco is here...and it is fantastic. It's dazzling visuals, enchanting music and heartfelt story make it one of Pixar's finest films. It is a love letter to Mexican culture, showing respect and reverence while still having some fun with tradition without mocking it.

This film is everything we love about going to the movies. A rich environment with character we connect with and a story that with great aspiration.

Please enjoy our podcast review of Coco.

Thor: Ragnarok is a change of pace for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Director Taika Waititi went in much different direction than the previous Thor films, opting to make a film that is a comedic buddy romp, rather than a mythological clash of gods and monsters. Waititi’s choices serve the film well as Ragnarok is fresh, funny and a lighthearted spectacle that will much needed as we head toward a darker time with the Marvel films to come.

The strength of the film lies in the chemistry of it’s cast members. Everyone is having fun on the set and it is evident in the finished film. Chris Hemsworth shows off his underused comedic timing and the script allows for a lot of improvisation that really helps the film maintain it’s energy. Cate Blanchett chews up the scenery as the sadistic and sexy Goddess of Death, Hela.

Thor: Ragnarok is not a film that delves deep into story…it’s more spectacle than substance but there is enough of a heart to the movie that it doesn’t feel cheap or forgettable. This is a film that relies on humor and spectacle and succeeds in being exactly what it set out to be. In this podcast we give our full review of the highly enjoyable, Thor: Ragnarok.

It’s very easy to be cynical about all of the sequels remakes and reboots that of been flooding cinemas over the past several years. However with Blade Runner 2049 there is nothing to be cynical about.

This sequel to the Ridley Scott sci-fi neo-noir classic is an excellent film. Blade Runner 2049 is directed by Denis Villenueve who recently brought us Arrival and Sicario. It’s a film that explores themes of authenticity and our desire to live lives of significance and rise above the mundane. It’s story is moving and it’s aesthetic is astounding.

Here is our podcast review of Blade Runner 2049. Please let us know your thoughts on Facebook and Twitter @nerdflixchill

Wonder Woman has finally arrived on the big screen in her first solo feature film!

With the DC Cinematic Universe struggling after Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, there were many that were skeptical if the Amazonian Princess could save the day for DC. In addition to that pressure, the film also needs to establish Wonder Woman as a transcendent figure, that could equal the other two members of the DC Trinity, Batman and Superman.

All of that pressure is a lot for film, but Patty Jenkins, Gal Gadot and Chris Pine were ready to take on the challenge.

In this podcast, we give you our full review of Wonder Woman.

Logan is Hugh Jackman's final appearance as Wolverine. Since 2000, we have seen 3 different actors play The Hulk, 3 different actors play Spider Man, and 3 different actors play Batman, but there has only been 1 Wolverine.

This film represents a much different style and tone than the other films in the X Men cinematic universe. It's dark, unapologetic and goes places where most films in this genre wouldn't dare.

In this podcast, we give our full review of Logan.

Batman is back...in Lego form. After Will Arnett stole the show with his portrayal of the Caped Crusader in The Lego Movie, he finally gets a much deserved spin off.

When it comes to superheroes, Batman is one of the elite; and he has made his way to the big screen in several different ways. Some Batman films have been rousing successes, some have been catastrophic failures and some, particularly recent endeavors have been lukewarm.

But now, Bats is back...and it's time to answer the big questions: Is Lego Batman worthy of carrying on the legacy? Is the Caped Crusader back and as good as ever?
