This week's episode of Westworld finally revealed a new park, though it was not the one we were suspecting. Rather, we got our first look at The Raj, but that wasn't all. We also got a quick glimpse of Shogun World.

Aside from the new parks we visited, Virtu e Fortuna provided more interesting storytelling parallels between Maeve and Dolores.

This is our full podcast recap of Westworld S2E3: Virtu e Fortuna.

This week's episode, Reunion, really shows the rich storytelling ability of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. This episode does a lot of heavy lifting. It adds 2 more timelines while also filling in a great deal of backstory about the hosts experiences in the real world. It also heavily teases the coming reveal of Delos' "big picture" plan.

Surely, by the end of the season, Reunion will be one of the episodes we point to as a significant piece of exposition for this season's mysteries. We hope you enjoy our podcast recap of Westworld S2E2: Reunion.

Marvel's Netflix series Jessica Jones has returned for it's second season and we are giving our full breakdown and review.

This season focuses on the internal turmoil that can arise when revisiting past trauma in search of closure. Where many Marvel series focus strongly on establishing the contrast between heroes and villains, Jessica Jones Season 2 challenges those ideas and puts forward a more personal story. This serves the series will in that it differentiates itself from the other shows in the Marvel/Netflix universe.

Season 2 has more than it's fair share of subplots as well. The secondary characters all have their own stories that branch off of the main narrative. Some of those subplots are more successful than others, but the core of the story remains that arc of Jessica Jones herself.

Annihilation is the latest film from Alex Garland, whose debut film Ex Machina, was a critically acclaimed work of sci-fi filmmaking. Garland sticks with that genre with his adaptation of the Jeff VanderMeer's book Annihilation. The adaptation is loose as Garland, after reading the book, wrote the screenplay based on his memory of the book, never referring back to it so that he could retain the "dream-like" quality of the story.

Annihilation follows the story of a biologist who enters into a natural phenomena called "The Shimmer," that seems to be having an impact on the environment around it. Within the deeper story we find evident themes of self-destruction, refraction, creation and metastasization. These themes are well explored as a work of science-fiction, but a film in this genre would not be complete without stunning visuals and world-building which this film does so well. It also includes a creature so unsettling that the mere realization that it exists on film will make you recoil while also grinning with delight.

In this podcast we give our full review of Annihilation while also discussing the film's many themes. It is a thoughtful work of science-fiction cinema that deserves to be seen in theaters.

Black Panther has finally hit theaters and we are here to give our review. Ryan Coogler is directing the latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but this time things are different. Black Panther is not just a comic book film, it is a transcendent cultural experience.

Marvel has been wildly successful with the MCU but their films are not without criticism. The studio has struggled particularly with introductory films for its heroes while also providing a Rogues Gallery of villains that range from tepid to forgettable. But this is where Black Panther breaks the mold and sets itself apart.

This film explores issues of power, privilege and responsibility. It does not shy away from discussions of race. It has a villain whose motivations are not only understandable but difficult to reason against. It’s perhaps Marvel’s most well told story. It’s a comic book film that is making a statement.

In this podcast we give our full review and breakdown of Ryan Coogler’s awesome, Black Panther.

This week we finally got our first look at Solo: A Star Wars Story. This film has been the subject of a great deal of rumor and conjecture ever since Ron Howard was brought in to replace the original directors, Lord and Miller.

There have been some who have said this film is dead on arrival, and that the lack of a trailer had shown that Lucasfilm has given up on Solo. But, what a difference a few days makes. The Solo trailer is very well put together and the film looks like a lot of fun.

In this podcast we discuss our first impressions from the trailer as well as what real challenges the movie will have to overcome in order for it to be successful. Additionally, we talk about some of our own speculation as to what the plot of the film may involve.

The Shape of Water is a genre-crossing adult fairytale from Guillermo Del Toro. It has recently garnered a lot of attention with it’s 13 Oscar nominations. The Shape of Water tells the story of a mute woman’s romance with a mystical creature set against the backdrop of Cold War America in 1962. But within that plot there are themes about love, communication and unlikely friendships.

This is a film that is executed at a very high level. The acting is excellent, the art direction and set design are beautiful. It is a fully immersive cinematic experience.

In this podcast we give our full review and breakdown of The Shape of Water.

It took us long enough, but we finally got around to seeing Get Out and we really want to talk about it. Jordan Peele makes a big splash in his directorial debut. Horror films are usually generic, low on thrills but high on jump scares. It is rare that we get a smart, suspenseful horror film, but that is what Get Out is.

However, it is also much more. It is a satire of white guilt and a parable for institutional racism. He plays with and subverts audience expectations when it comes to the racial dynamics of the film.

Get Out is a lot of fun to watch. It is brilliantly crafted and shows such polish that it is shocking to think of it as a first film. There are also a lot of fun winks and nods along the way.

In this podcast, we do a full breakdown of Get Out.

The Last Jedi is a film that continues to spark conversation among it's fans as well as it's detractors. But amidst the back and forth shouting, we believe that are some really interesting discussions to be had around this film. From it's meta-commentary to it's applicability to real-life scenarios, The Last Jedi just has so much to unpack. This is our 3rd podcast dedicated to the film.

In this show we dive even deeper into the film. We discuss the odd mystery of Luke's ceremonial Jedi robes and the potentially dark implications of his wardrobe change. We also dig deeper into Kylo Ren's attempt to manipulate Rey to join the dark side, and how that manipulation is reflective of a cultural moment we are currently living in.

Dec 20, 2017

We have now each had a chance to see The Last Jedi twice and we are continuing our discussion of the film. This time we are digging deeper into the themes of the film which include: ascension and facing the future, coming to terms with failure and finding your place in the world.

This film has been a hot subject of debate in the fan community and even on our podcast we find ourselves having differing opinions on The Last Jedi. One thing we both agree on is that this is one of the most thematically dense Star Wars films with dialogue that reveals so much about the characters that it takes multiple viewings to unpack it all. Even as we post this episode we are planning another discussion of the film.

We hope you enjoy the second review podcast of Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
